I love getting my dog new accessories, I possibly find it even more fun than getting new things for myself. However, I do generally need to be able to justify each purchase to my husband.

After our last trip to the beach with the dog, I decided she absolutely needed a new collar and lead before our next trip. The reason for this? Her stinking, salty, sandy, wet collar and lead. They stank after a day at the beach, and I had to stick them in the wash along with her harness and towels too. As we have a week planned in Cornwall this summer, now was the chance to invest in a waterproof dog collar and lead set.

The previous beach trip was a one day excursion, but for a week’s holiday we are going to be on the beach everyday. Do I want to be giving the dog’s collar and lead and full wash and dry every day? Absolutely not. I picked up a matching waterproof collar and lead a couple of months ago, and I’m so pleased with my purchase. Here are all the great reasons why I love having a waterproof dog collar and lead now, and why you will too.

They couldn’t be easier to clean!

A waterproof collar and lead are wipe clean. Just take them off your pet, rinse with water or wipe with a damp cloth and good as new! This is so much easier than putting them in the washing machine, then leaving them to dry on the radiator. I don’t need to wipe the collar clean everyday, I would just do it after a particularly muddy walk.

The waterproof collar and lead set that we have is actually dishwasher safe. This made me so happy! I put them in the dishwasher last week for a proper deep clean to get them holiday ready, and they came out almost brand new. Here are some before and after shots.  Always check the product listing for the manufacturer’s washing advice. As you can see they came out great, although a little bit of staining has stayed on the lead after a very wet and muddy UK winter. For this reason I’d recommend getting a darker colour!

A waterproof dog collar and lead doesn’t hold smells

Even prior to wiping it clean, the rubber texture of a waterproof dog collar and lead doesn’t hold smells the same way fabric does. This is particularly important to me, as my dog likes to roll in poop. Yes, you read that right. I’m not sure whether this is an all dogs thing, or just working breeds like my Springador (Labrador X Springer). But it is one of my least favourite traits about her. We can be having the most beautiful walk, then she will find some fox poo to roll in and ruin it.

My dog has no comprehension of the fact rolling in poo means she needs a bath at the end of the walk. Even though she’s so sad when I get the hose out when we get home. It’s so great hosing her down with her waterproof collar and lead on, because they don’t get soggy, and they get cleaned at the same time. When she had a fabric collar, again this would need a thorough wash with detergent to try and get rid of the poo smell. Sometimes it would even take multiple washes. I’m so glad I don’t have to deal with that anymore!

They’re so hardwearing

Has your dog ever chewed through a lead? Mine has certainly tried, particularly when she was a puppy. A waterproof lead is so much more durable than a fabric lead though. Don’t believe me? Here is evidence of my dog giving it a good chew. I promise it survived without a scratch.  I was just trying to take a nice picture of her for this blog post, but she decided she didn’t feel like modelling.

Quick drying

Have you ever gone to put the collar and lead on your dog, to find they’re still wet? Either from a wash, or a previous rainy walk – which in Britain, many walks are rainy. I’m sure many dog owners like myself walk their dogs multiple times per day, so they might not get a chance to dry in between. Have you ever heard the joke that taking your dog’s collar off, must feel like taking your bra off at the end of the day? Imagine trying to put a damp bra on. Yuck. Putting a damp collar back on your dog for their next walk is just not ideal.

Perfect for the Beach!

All these features combined, make a waterproof dog collar and lead the perfect option for the beach! You won’t be shaking sand off them for too long – a quick rinse and all the sand and salt water will be gone in a flash. They won’t stay soggy for ages, or have that stinky salty beach smell lingering until you wash them. They will be fresh and ready to re-wear in an instant! I can’t say the same for your dog though – their post beach smell is a whole other issue.

If you’re thinking wow, I definitely need a waterproof collar and lead –  Then here are some options you could look into.

Pawsome Paws Boutique (Not sponsored!)

My set are from Pawsome Paws Boutique, a UK based dog accessories business – here is a link to their full waterproof collection. I picked mine up on sale for just £21.28 for both the collar and lead. They have a 20% reduction if you buy the collar and lead together, on both the sale and the full price options – amazing! I’m a huge fan of this brand, and did a review on their Tough Trails Harness as well.
